My current workstation

They say your desk says a lot about your personality.

So here’s mine:

With distinguishing features numbered:

Components:

NumberComponentProduct
1Document holderLink
2Turkish coffee cup and base. Always in use!A secret
3Logitech K120. Sometimes keep a Cherry MX Brown board on the desk two and alternate.
4Wireless intercom stationLink
5Triple monitor mountLink
7White noise generatorLink
  • The desk itself is 200cm x 75cm of solid wood that I bought from a local DIY store and finished with a few coats of paint-on water-based lacquer. It was my first “woodworking” project, so I intend refinishing it whenever (if ever?) I have time. I didn’t do a proper job sanding it and it has a lot of little annoying abrasions.
  • The office intercom is so that I can go totally phone-less while working and still stay in touch with somebody in the building. I’ve talked about my evolving communications preferences here — and going phone-less while writing is my next plan.
  • The white noise machine and Etymotics (sadly, the company doesn’t make a Bluetooth pair yet, so it’s hooked up by a long 3.5mm extension) are constantly in use!

Not in shot

  • Custom desktop: Ubuntu + LXQt / 16 GB RAM / i3 (yes, i3, and it works perfectly, although I just use the setup for office work)
  • UPS: Eaton 5E
  • Laser printer and scanner: HP M15w compact laser printer. Love this product!

Future planned improvements

  • I recently bought a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 so may now able to extend to five or potentially six monitors — depending on whether my Ubuntu likes the idea of daisy-chaining the DP output.
  • Macro keyboard. Pricey! If I wasn’t trying to keep my tech budget within reasonable proportions, I would probably order this keypad or the X-keys 60 key version from Amazon. The DIY options for converting a second keyboard into a programmable / macro board look kind of intimidating to me — it took me hours just to get my trusty em dash (—) key to work!
  • The next additional monitor is likely to be a fourth monitor which I will add on a single mount to the left hand side of the desk.

Purchased but not currently in use

  • External power switch
  • Desk-sized mouse pad
  • Ergonomic mouse
  • Mechanical keyboards

Feedback? I’ve love to hear what you think might be my next improvements.
